Delicious fresh eggs rule. But they are a giant pain in the butt when you want to make hard-boiled eggs.

Everyone knows that older eggs are easier to peel when hard-boiled. But what if your eggs are fresh and you need to boil some right now? Well, friends, you turn to the Instant Pot.

Using just your electric pressure cooker and a metal rack, trivet, or steamer basket, will give you the best-boiled eggs ever. Depending on how long you cook them, you can have jammy eggs, soft-boiled, or hard-boiled with a firm yolk.

And I cannot emphasize this enough – these eggs are SO easy to peel! No more picking at the shell; nope, it comes off in large pieces!

What Is The 5-5-5 Method for Eggs in the Instant Pot?

The 5-5-5 method is a great kitchen hack for making perfect eggs. Five minutes of cooking in the Instant Pot, five minutes of letting them rest in the pressure cooker, and then five minutes in an ice bath.

How Many Eggs Can You Hard-Boil in an Instant Pot at One Time?

It depends on the size of your Instant Pot, but you can really cook A LOT at once! I find that I can cook 6-9 on the trivet that came with my Instant Pot.

When you want to cook more than that, add a steamer basket with sides, or even a stacking insert for the pressure cooker. A more structured basket keeps you from playing egg “Tetris”.

Even if you’re cooking a lot of eggs at once, you do not need to add additional water to the insert. Stick with 1 cup of water.

How to Use Hard-Boiled Eggs

  1. Eat them! Salt, fresh cracked pepper, and dried dill are a boiled egg’s best friend.
  2. Healthy Deviled Eggs. Oh my yes. 
  3. Chef/cobb salads. We eat these during the summer and for easy meals during soccer season.
  4. As an ingredient in Instant Pot Potato Salad.
  5. Pickle those bad boys! My mother-in-law loves to pickle eggs in brine leftover from homemade pickles and Encurtido.
  6. Greek Yogurt Egg Salad. Please and thank you.

Can You Overcook Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot?

Not really, unless you intentionally set the cooking time for too long. The yolks you see in these photos used the 5-5-5 method. If you like a jammy egg, 2-3 minutes works great. Soft boiled would be 3-4.

Anything longer than 5-6 minutes will lead to very dry yolks. But maybe that’s what you want; in that case, rock on!

Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

  • Use A LOT of ice to quickly cool the eggs. Cool for at least 5 minutes in the ice bath.
  • You can store peeled or unpeeled hard-boiled eggs in the fridge for up to 7 days.
  • If you peel them, place a clean cloth or paper towel in the bottom of the container before storing. They’ll “sweat” as they sit in the fridge.
  • The cooking time remains the same whether you are using a 3, 6, or 8-quart electric pressure cooker.

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

Prep: 0 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes
Pressurizing/Depressurizing: 10 minutes
Total: 15 minutes

Ingredients 

  • eggs {as many as your heart desires}
  • 1 cup water
  • ice

Instructions 

  • Place the trivet/rack in the bottom of the Instant Pot. 
  • Add water and place the eggs on the trivet as evenly as possible
    1 cup water, eggs
  • Secure the lid and set the vent to sealing. Press manual>high pressure>5 minutes.
    Note: If you like jammy eggs, 2-3 minutes works great. Soft boiled would be 3-4.
  • When the cook time is up, do a natural release for 5 minutes and then flip the vent to venting and perform a quick release.
  • Carefully place eggs in a bowl full of ice water for at least 5 minutes. Peel when eggs are completely cold.

  1. I just wanted to ask a clarification question. I sometimes like hard-boiled eggs and sometimes soft-boiled eggs. I don’t think I understand what “jammy eggs” are at all.

    So how many minutes for hard-boiled eggs and how many minutes for soft-boiled eggs please?

    We too love the instant pot! I use it for hb eggs, stock, yogurt and so on…..I’m having to timetable its use otherwise it’s got yogurt in it when I want to do something else! I’m trying hard not to get a second, as most of the time it would be a right royal PITA.

    I made your delicious tomato soup today, but IP was busy incubating yogurt, so had to do it stove top. Quelle horreur! I used chopped tomatoes as I don’t think I could get the tomatoes you recommend. It needed a bit more stock as it was slightly thick. A spot of fresh basil at the end as well as the dried in the soup. Dad added Worcestershire sauce to his (why?) and DD added your recommended balsamic vinegar, but she’s a big fan of that.

    4 of us for lunch, 2 lots of 2 portions into mayo jars for another day and a small amount left after that. It went into my baked chicken winglets marinade! Mmmmmm!

    1. It can totally be a challenge trying to figure out how/when to cook things when it comes to the IP. I’m big on cooking the yogurt overnight since I wouldn’t really be using the IP during that time anyway.

      So confession time: I only ever make the tomato soup on the stove! It’s so fast that it doesn’t even seem like getting the IP out is worth it. Were the chopped tomatoes fresh or canned? I’m also so curious to see how people in different countries adapt the recipes. Worcesterhire huh? Did not see that one coming! 🙂

      How clever to put it into chicken marinade. I’ve never thought of repurposing soup like that. I mainly just eat it for breakfast.

  7. I’ll never cook mine another way! I’ve since found another hack–making a egg “bake” in a pan inside my instant pot. If you’re going to chop up the eggs anyway, it’s amazing! You just crack them into a greased 7″ cake pan, then steam as usual in the IP. When they’re done, I pop the disc out and mash the eggs through a grid drying rack into a bowl. Bam.   8. I thought it was cute that one of your sons added dinosaurs to the photo. Then I realized that they were your salt and pepper shakers!! My son is currently obsessed with dinosaurs and would flip out over these. Do you have a problem with your boys putting too much S & P on food because they love the shakers? I imagine I’d have the problem. 🙂

    1. Ha, I think Bennett was asleep and Jack was at school when I took those photos. It was all me! 🙂

      Neither boy really cares about putting salt and pepper on their food and these mainly stay in the cupboard except when guests come over. They aren’t really tempted to play with them as a result.

    1. I was hard boiling eggs for chef salads later in the day and only wanted 6 for that. But yes you can put tons in the IP!
