Form into 3.5 to 5-inch wide patties that are about 1/3-1/2 inch thick.
Place on the parchment and make an indent with your thumb at least halfway through the middle of the patty.
Place a square of butter in each indent.

For best results: refrigerate for 1 hour or freeze for 20 minutes.
Preheat the air fryer at 400F for 4 minutes.
Brush the air fryer basket with olive oil or use air fryer parchment. Place the patties in the basket.
Cook at 400F for 10 minutes. Flip if they are browning too much.
Add cheese if using and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until an instant read thermometer reads 165F.
