Imagine what your meal prep is going to look like if you don’t have to peel and chop ginger anytime you need it?

With just a few minutes of work, that dream is about to become a reality. Lucky you!

Do you remember how your life changed when I taught you how to freeze garlic the easy way and how to freeze onions? Well, friends, frozen ginger is just as awesome to have stashed in the freezer.

Can You Freeze Fresh Ginger?

Yes! It holds up so well in the freezer and makes your meal prep a freaking dream. And it’s so very easy.

Try it in peanut butter chicken, honey ginger syrup, Instant Pot orange chicken, and gluten-free teriyaki sauce.

Do You Have to Peel Ginger Before Freezing?

No, you don’t have to. But if you plan to use it for recipes that need peeled ginger, it’s so much easier to do it before freezing.

How Do You Thaw Frozen Ginger?

You can leave each frozen ginger “puck” at room temperature for 30 minutes or microwave it on low for 20 seconds. In most cases, I throw it into my dishes while it is still frozen and just allow it to thaw as I cook.

Ingredients

  • ginger
  • water as needed

Instructions

Freezing Minced Ginger

  • (optional) Peel ginger with a spoon, vegetable peeler, or sharp knife.
  • Using a sharp knife, mince the ginger to uniform pieces. If you have a food processor, you can "pulse" the ginger to quickly chop everything.
  • Transfer minced ginger to a bowl, and add water a teaspoon at a time until it creates a "paste".
  • Spoon ginger paste into mini muffin tins lined with muffin papers, filling them three-fourths full.
  • Freeze for 2-3 hours, and then remove the muffin liners from the pan and freeze each "puck" in an air-tight container for up to 6 months.

Freezing Whole Ginger

  • Place clean ginger in a freeze-proof bag, removing any excess air.
  • Store in an air-tight container for up to 6 months.

Freezing Sliced Ginger

  • (optional) Peel ginger with a spoon, vegetable peeler, or sharp knife.
  • Slice ginger into desired width.
