How to make air fryer calzones
*I’ll walk you through it here with some photos and tips, and you’ll also find a printable recipe card at the bottom of the post with exact measurements, etc. You can also click “jump to recipe” to skip down.
Whether you’re using homemade or storebought dough, divide it into eight equal portions. If you pulled it from the fridge, allow it to sit at room temperature for an hour.
Roll each piece of dough until it is about 6 inches in diameter, and ~1/8 inch thick.
Spread 1-2 tbsp of pizza sauce on one half of the circle, leaving a 1-inch border. Add ~3 tbsp cheese and ~2 tbsp various toppings. Pro tip: keeping a border prevents the ingredients from leaking out the sides when rolling and baking.
Fold the clean side of the dough up and over the filled side. Gently twist and pinch the edges together to seal the calzone. Use a knife to cut 2-3 vents in the top.
Brush olive oil on the basket of the air fryer AND the top of the calzone. If desired, you can also use a piece of air fryer parchment in the basket.
Place 1-2 calzones in the air fryer and bake at 370˚F for 9 minutes (check at 7 minutes since all air fryers will bake slightly differently).
Frequently asked questions
Yes! You can prep the pizza dough ahead of time. It will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days, or in the freezer for 3-6 months. Allow the dough to come to room temperature before working with it.
You can also assemble the calzones and store them unbaked in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
In this case, making calzones in an air fryer is faster than making pizza.
However, if you follow the oven-baking instructions, calzones bake in about the same amount of time as pizza.
Nothing! This recipe uses pizza crust for the base and crust of the calzones.
Absolutely! Consider a calzone just a folded pizza, and a tasty sauce is an important part of this recipe.
You can also serve marinara or leftover pizza sauce on the side for dipping.
Yes! Place assembled calzones on a baking sheet and bake at 435˚F for 15-20 minutes.
HOW TO STORE AND REHEAT
Storing Leftovers: Allow leftover calzones to fully cool before storing in an air-tight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
Reheating Leftovers: These calzones reheat amazingly well! Microwave them for 20-30 seconds, or at 340˚F for 2-6 minutes in the air fryer. You can read more details in our post on how to reheat pizza in an air fryer.
Freezing Leftovers: Place unbaked calzones on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment or waxed paper. Freeze for 3 hours and transfer to freezer-safe storage.
To bake: place frozen calzones in the air fryer and bake at 375˚F for 11 minutes, or until the tops are lightly browned. Check at 9 minutes.

Super easy to make!! Followed the pizza dough recipe as well!! My boys loved them and my son enjoyed putting them together with me. Paired with a big salad and everyone was full and super satisfied. This is a good one!!!
I’m really big on big batch freezer meals, and this would be perfect for me. I personally don’t use any parchment in my air fryer because to me there’s no difference even with clean up. I just put both the basket and drawer in the dishwasher–problem solved. I can understand if the basket and/or drawer can’t go in the dishwasher, but for my model they both can. I also oil the entire calzone or whatever food I’m air frying. I use EVO oil sprayers–each spray is exactly 1/4 teaspoon so I know exactly what I’m putting on my foods before air frying them.
