How Can I Sweeten My Coffee Without Sugar
My recipe has just three simple ingredients – milk, vanilla, and dates. While I use heavy cream for my own consumption, you are welcome to choose any milk that you like to drink.
If you find yourself with leftover dates, check out my archive of date recipes.
To make this paleo: use a non-dairy milk with some creaminess to it like coconut or cashew.
As this is already really low carb, leaving the heavy cream in would make this keto-friendly. All the powdered sugar substitutes that the keto diet uses do really weird things to my sensitive teeth, so this is an alternative that may work better for some keto followers.

Here’s How to Make It:
- Combine cream, dates, and vanilla in a saucepan and cook on medium heat for 15 minutes. Stir often.
- Transfer to a high-powered blender (like Vitamix), and blend until the dates are fully incorporated into the mixture. If you have a conventional blender, blend on high for 2-3 minutes.
- Then using a metal sieve, a piece of cheesecloth, or even a colander fitted with a tea towel (or paper towel), strain the mixture to remove any date particles that may remain.
Variations on Homemade Sugar-Free Coffee Creamer:
- Almond flavored: Add almond extract (yum) instead of the vanilla.
- Hazelnut: replace the vanilla with hazelnut extract.
- Chocolate Hazelnut (hold me): hazelnut extract and 1 tbsp dark cocoa powder.
- Cinnamon Roll creamer: add 2 tsp of ground cinnamon along with the vanilla extract.
- Chocolate Mint: 1 tbsp dark cocoa powder, and 1/2 tsp mint extract. (related: try homemade)

I find it totally bizarre that a hm coffee creamer isn’t something the Whole30 police allow, but you can have Nutpods.
Except they are not available here.
You are right, black coffee is shit!
There are tons of aspects of Whole30 that just have my scratching my head sometimes Pauline!
I’m doing the keto diet and I used coffeemate creamer. How does this compare to that and is it keto for sure? ThanksÂ
Hi Christina, you’d have to look at the nutritional label for the creamer you were using (there are so many kinds of coffee mate!). This creamer has 1g carb, 1g sugar, and 5g fat.
I too am fall for the white dragon and have ditched all daily refined sugars except in my coffee. I considered just not drinking coffee but being my last vice it’s so hard to say goodbye.
I wanted to try something like this without the dates. Hoping flavor and cream will be enough. If you come up with a rich flavor combo or something with no sweet added please share. I’d love to try it!
Shirley, have you tried Nutpods? It is non-sweet dairy-free creamer that is actually really delicious. I don’t have a problem with dairy but I love the consistency and taste of Nutpods. I know the name is insanely weird.
They can be harder to find but are in the coffee creamer section at my local grocery store.
Yum! This is soooooo good! I had to stop myself from eating it straight out of the jar. Can’t wait to try it in my coffee tomorrow!
I love it too Nicole and am so glad you found it tasty!
why don’t you just drink your coffee with ordinary milk ? fullfat, half, I don’t see any reason to produce a substitute?
Angela
Good question Angela! It is because coffee is like anything in life – what works for one person may not work for another. Giving people options and letting them choose what they prefer is my favorite thing. If you like regular milk then keep on keeping on. But a lot of my readers are dairy-free, vegan, etc., and like fun alternatives that work for them.
So I read on the back of my coconut oil (the kind that actually tastes like coconut- Â unrefined???) that it can be used as coffee creamer. Have you tried it in any creamer recipe? Sounds yuckie though I like green mountain island coconut coffee.Â
Some people use it in bulletproof coffee but I just feel like it would coat your teeth and be nasty. They also use butter or ghee.

Dates have sugar in them……
Weight Gain: Dates should be included as a part of a healthy diet. They consist of sugar, proteins and many essential vitamins. If dates are consumed with cucumber paste, you can keep your weight at a normal, balanced level, rather than over-slimming. One kilogram of dates contains almost 3,000 calories, and the calories in them are sufficient to meet the daily requirements for a human body. Of course, you should not eat just dates throughout the day. If you are thin and slim and want to increase your weight, or if you are trying to build your muscles to impress some girl, or you have become weak due to a serious medical problem – you need to eat dates!
So much yes here! I drink 1-2 cups of coffee per day but I don’t like throwing table sugar in things and artificial sweeteners aren’t my favorite either. Plus dates have so many vitamins. I love this and I will have to try it out! <3
Does it look curdled and separate after it’s been frozen? If you’ve ever frozen half and half, it’s chunky in coffee when thawed.
It gets a little grainy, but not curdled. Half and half doesn’t have enough milkfat to freeze “cleanly”, which is why I recommend a cream with at least 40% milkfat.
Thank you! I’ll try it. Lazy lady lasagne is awesome by the way!
That actually sounds pretty good! I too drink only decaf, and my children are fiends for coffee, also only decaf.. but I hardly drink it and usually only let them have it on the weekends. We use heavy cream and those flavored syrups but this sounds nicer to be sugar free!
