If you want to watch someone from Washington State laugh, ask them which store they bought their blackberries from to make this blackberry compote.

Um, we don’t buy blackberries at the store. We pick them from the side of the road, from the yards of abandoned houses, and from the edges of ball fields.

They grow abundantly and freely everywhere. And when you’ve had your fill of snacking on them, use the leftovers to make a batch of this delicious four-ingredient compote.

bowls of ingredients on a grey board.

The final texture of the finished blackberry compote is entirely up to you. You’ll see that I cooked mine down until it was pretty saucy with some remaining intact berries.

If you prefer yours a bit “chunkier”, simply cook it for less time. You, my friend, are the chef, and you are in control of the outcome!

While delicious on ice cream or as part of a fancy pants cheeseboard, I prefer to enjoy mine on plain yogurt (my favorite homemade recipe is this Instant Pot cold start yogurt) or over sour cream pancakes.

Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

  • If, during the simmering time, the mixture seems a little dry, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time to keep your blackberry compote from burning.
  • You can infuse your compote with herbs for a different spin on this recipe. Bundle fresh (or frozen) mintbasil, or thyme sprigs in cheesecloth and simmer with the compote; remove them and discard before serving.
