Can I Eat Bacon on the Whole30?
Yes, you sure can! But as with anything in life, there are stipulations and rules to follow. Ugh, adult stuff.
One, you need to read the labels carefully to make sure it is sugar-free, nitrate-free, and free of the Whole30 banned additives. Two, they strongly suggest that it is made from pastured pigs that are humanely raised. Here is what they have to say about that:
Factory-farmed pork is one of the unhealthiest and most mistreated animals in our farming system, and these animals tend to store toxins from their environment and feed in their fat. Since bacon is more fat than meat, that grocery store bacon is really not a healthy food choice. (Source).
Pro tip: when shopping, it might also be labeled as paleo or sugar-free bacon. But as always, double-check the ingredients for yourself!
Everyone knows the best way to cook bacon is to bake it in the oven, right? Right? You can make a bunch at once to freeze which makes for amazing meal prep. But if you just need a few pieces cooked quickly, check out this Air Fryer Bacon.
What is Whole30 Approved Bacon?
As discussed above, it is from pastured animals that is free of sugar and nitrates. But here is where things get super confusing when you’re new to the program.
Oftentimes the package will list 0% or 0 grams of sugar on the nutritional label, but you’ll see sugar listed in the ingredients. For evaluating if a product is truly sugar-free, only the ingredient list matters.
One thing to keep in mind is that the sticker shock of sugar-free bacon can be very overwhelming. To produce a product without sugar or nitrates and from pastured meat is not a cheap process.
The price of compliant items is quite high compared with the conventional stuff. To help you save some cash, some of the brands listed below (like Butcher Box and Thrive) have discount codes noted.
You can also try enjoying it in smaller doses like in Fried Cabbage With Bacon which is Whole30, paleo, and keto-friendly.
Whole30 Bacon Brands
This is by no means an exhaustive list of Whole30 compliant brands, so if you know of one that is not here, please leave details in the comment.
Quick note: in many markets, Costco’s Kirkland Low-Sodium bacon is technically considered Whole30 compliant if you’re looking at only the ingredients. But as the meat is conventionally (factory-farmed) raised and has tons of additives, it is a product that is best avoided if your budget allows for other options.
The list below is alphabetical. If no tasting notes are included it means I was unable to find the product locally to try for myself.

So….What is the Best Whole30 Bacon?
Tie: Nature’s Ranch Hickory Smoked Uncured Bacon and Pederson Farm’s Hickory Smoked.
Overall, Nature’s Ranch was my favorite, but because it is only available at one store (that millions of people can’t access), I downgraded it to a tie. Pederson’s is absolutely delicious and more widely available.
Best Whole30 Turkey Bacon
Winner: Wellshire Sugar-Free Turkey Bacon. The taste, texture, and crispiness made it a delicious and clear winner.

Thank you for all the info.I have a question, I have a whole frozen chicken,do I have to thaw it before cooking in my my Ninja foodi in my air fryer
Joan, I have not cooked a whole chicken in an air fryer before, so I don’t feel comfortable advising you on this.
Hi Sarah! Thanks for the list. Our favorite Whole30 bacon is Hempler’s Sugar-Free Bacon. They seem to have stopped carrying it at our local WinCo, but we did find some at Safeway. It’s thick sliced and tastes great.
Heather, thank you for commenting and telling me about that brand! I’ve never seen it before, and I love adding new resources to these types of posts. THANK YOU! I’ll be updating it soon. 🙂
Hi, At time of writing Primal Cut are the only Whole30 Approved producer and retailer of Whole30 sausages, Whole30 bacon and Whole30 charcuterie products in the UK. I was drawn to this article from the reference in the description, it read like it was an absolute list of Whole30 bacon available online (web). Though, we seem to be missing! Though not to worry, it seems this review is a focus on available only on Whole30 bacon in the US.
We’re in the UK, yes Whole30 is becoming increasingly popular in England too. Here’s a link to our selection of Whole30 bacon: https://www.primalcut.co.uk/nitrite-free-bacon
Feel free to get in touch if you’d like any further information.
Hi Michael, thanks for letting me know about your brand!
Though I will say, the post was never presented as an absolute list. In fact, under a photo of bacon in the post, I have even written: “This is by no means an exhaustive list of Whole30 compliant brands, so if you know of one that is not here, please leave details in the comment.”
Please feel free to email me more details about how/where UK customers can purchase and I can update.
Is the fried cabbage the mother-in-law’s one I made that is to die for? Mmmm mm!!
yes!!
You had me at bacon. And that heart is amazing!
I find that by baking the bacon, I manage to make the entire package without eating it as I cook it 🙂
We call that “snack-on”…bacon you snack on while you cook the rest.
I struggled with the label reading part of Whole30, we won’t mention a meltdown in the peanut butter aisle, so I downloaded an APP called whole30days. I’m sure it has other features but I use it for the bar code scanner that then pops up an “approved” or “not approved”. It doesn’t work so well at my food co-op due to all the funkier things but at the local grocery store it’s great in a pinch. And since I have a habit of grabbing fun crap instead of healthy…it’s a good deterrent…
Label reading is the hardest part. That app sounds amazing! Did you check out the awesome lists Sarah made of Whole30 foods? I took the Costco one with me on my last trip and it made the experience so much better and way less overwhelming.
We live in the middle of no where. No Trader Joe’s, no Costco. I do have a copy of the list though for things that are similar.
I have heard that no apps are Whole30 approved (they’re probably trying to make their own to cash in $$$$), but I think if you find something that works as a starting point that is a total win in my book.
