When my husband and I decided to do our first Whole30 round in May 2018, I scoured the internet for recipes and printable Whole30 shopping lists. I found a few and was let down to the say the least.
You’d find a non-detailed list that said something like “Almonds” or “Lara Bars”. But when I would go to Trader Joe’s I would see that some of the almonds were roasted in banned oils, and some of the Lara Bars weren’t compliant.
I wanted specifics people. SPELL IT OUT for me, m’kay?
So, I spent four hours (FOUR) at my local Trader Joe’s looking over every item that might be remotely Whole30 compliant. And I took notes. And photos.
I was there so long that I was approached by 15 different people who were asking where things were located. By the third one, I stopped saying “I don’t work here” and I just took them over to the sesame sticks. They all wanted the sesame sticks!
Listen, sometimes when you’re embarking on something new, you need some hand-holding by someone who has been there before. And I’m here to hold your hand through this Whole30 experience. Print out this Trader Joe’s Whole30 shopping list and get your tushie to the store.

A few quick notes about this Trader Joe’s shopping list:
- Things are subject to change depending on the whims of Trader Joe’s and availability of inventory.
- Some of the items may be seasonal.
- Some items may be regional or not available at all locations.
- Always check the labels! Recipes and ingredients can change without notice.
A Few Abbreviations:
Due to space I couldn’t write everything out word for word and relied on some abbreviations to keep this under 15 pages! There is a key on each page for three of the main terms.
- V = vegetarian
- Veg = vegan
- Un.Su = unsulfured
- Un.Sw = unsweetened
- G.Fed = grassfed
- Org. = organic
- BL = boneless
- SK = skinless
Whole30 Beginner Resources
If this is your first time doing a Whole30 round, it’s great to read up on what is and is not allowed. The Whole30 website is a great first step. And their printable list of banned and allowed additives is very useful.
From there, the Whole30 Book, It Starts With Food is a helpful and in-depth read. There are also Whole30 cookbooks (Slow Cooker, Fast and Easy recipes, Original, and Food Freedom) that are packed with recipes and success tips. I’m a big fan of the library so check your local branch first to see if they have copies on hand.
And finally, I have tons and tons of Whole30 recipes that are printable and packed full of flavor and all that compliant goodness.

Trader Joe’s also has a huge supply of compliant RX Bars and Lara Bars. Not all are compliant so do review the shopping list for specifics. I never wanted to spend money on Lara Bars, so I learned to make my own! These spicy Mexican Hot Chocolate Lara Bars are compliant and sooooo good.
Just remember, bars are considered an emergency food and are not to be used to satisfy sugar cravings.

Affordable and simple to use, frozen veggies are such an easy way to rock your round. In fact, I love frozen veg so much, I wrote The Ultimate Guide to Roasting Frozen Vegetables.
Fresh and Frozen Meat and Fish
Whole cuts of frozen meat and fish, or even ready to heat burgers can make for simple and delicious meals. Cook up some of the salmon to use in my Paleo Salmon Cakes and you’ll be winning dinner and the leftovers game.
Sauces & Condiments
Ramp up the flavor and make your meal prep a breeze with these prepared sauces and condiments.
Pickles, Olives, and Tomatoes

Use a few cans of compliant whole peeled tomatoes and make a batch of this addicting Gluten-Free Tomato Soup. My husband’s boss called it the best tomato soup he has ever had!
No, you’re not really going to be doing any baking, but Trader Joe’s has many Whole30 compliant ingredients in their baking section, like almond flour, pumpkin puree, and butternut squash.
Oils, Vinegar, and Spices
Flavor is key for helping you stay compliant. It’s too easy to cheat when you’re eating boring food. Balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and delicious spice blends like Everything But the Bagel Seasoning (try it on this Healthy Sausage and Roasted Vegetables Sheet Pan Dinner) will take your food to the next level.
Well, friends, are you ready? Are you pumped? Maybe a little bit nervous?
You may find some challenges over the next 30 days, but you’re going to also learn some amazing things about yourself! You may discover a new dinner that you love like Healthy Orange Chicken or a life hack like baking bacon to cut back on meal prep.
