What Ingredients Are in a Virgin Mojito Recipe?

lime, mint, and ice on a white board with a citrus squeezer for making a mojito mocktail

Fresh lime juice makes this drink bright and flavorful, but you can totally cheat if you want to make pitchers for a crowd, or just don’t feel the desire to squeeze limes.

Using a quality limeade is a great substitute for the lime juice and the simple syrup combo. Use 1/4 cup of limeade in lieu of the fresh lime and honey syrup. When I buy limeade I love Newman’s Own brand because it tastes fresh and has a great lime flavor.

We use plain sparkling water that we make in our Soda Stream, but feel free to use your favorite sparkling water. Want to use a flavored sparkling water? Go for it! I would stick with lime or lemon, but that’s just me.

Technically you could also use ginger ale or a lemon-lime flavored soda in lieu of the sparkling water, but I’m in the camp of “why add more sugar when it isn’t needed”.

How Long Can You Store the Simple Syrup?

If you want to make the Honey Simple Syrup ahead of time, you can store it in the fridge for up to four weeks.

How to Make a Virgin Mojito?

  1. Place mint leaves and lime juice in a glass and muddle them together. Muddling = mushing them up and crushing the leaves to release the flavor and oils the mint. Use a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon. Or a set of brass knuckles. To each their own.
  2. Add the honey simple syrup.
  3. Add the sparkling water.
  4. Garnish with lime slices, a sprig of mint, and/or fresh fruit (see Variations below).

Pro Tips/Recipe Notes:

  • Try freezing mint or making mint simple syrup if you have a surplus so you always have the ingredients on hand.
  • If you want to make this for a crowd, pulse the fresh mint in a food processor with a splash of water, or roughly chop it with a knife. Muddling the mint in each individual glass would be a giant pain in the butt.
  • Sub in 1/4 cup limeade instead of fresh lime juice and honey simple syrup.
  • Premix and freeze the lime/syrup combo in small souper cubes so everything is ready to go when the cravings strike.
  • If you want to make this mojito mocktail an “adult” drink, add 2 oz white rum when you add the sparkling water.

  1. Refreshing!
Made it with two tweaks: I have orange simple syrup from when I candied orange peels, and didn’t have plain club soda but did have grapefruit-flavored sparkling water. It turned out surprisingly well.
I muddled 10 mint leaves and 2T bottled lime juice in the glass with 1T of orange simple syrup, then added about 8 oz of grapefruit sparkling water. The orange syrup and grapefruit water have enough natural aromato let me get away with less sugar. Delicious!5 stars

  2. hello! if I wanted to do the strawberry version, at what process would I include it? The muddle process before the soda?

    1. It depends on how much strawberry you want in there! I’d likely muddle it with the mint for a deeper strawberry flavor. If you just want a hint of strawberry, you can simply garnish with a few slices on top right before serving.

  3. the result was amazing!! i was looking for an easy recipe to try of my favourite drink, but didn’t know where to find the syrup or so a couple of steps. perfect for anyone!! i recommend this to everyone looking for a cool drink during the summers!5 stars

  4. I made this for a work drinks function. We added rum for the drinkers. It’s a great balanced drink which went down brilliantly with the assorted people at work. I actually preferred the virgin option, the honey simple syrup gave it a depth of flavour that didn’t get in the way of the mint or lime. 5 stars

    1. So glad you all liked it Nic! And I do love that honey simple syrup…plus it can almost convince you that it’s a great drink when you’re sick. 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review!

  5. Regarding your Scooby Doo quote, it’s ‘meddling kids’ not ‘muddling kids’ lol sorry, couldn’t help myself

  6. Congrats on the Oprah mention!!  I used this recipe last summer..all dang summer.  I planted mojito mint and  the plant legit smells like a mojito! I also used spindrift sparkling water for different flavor combos.  Raspberry lime was the hands down favorite.  Thanks for the freak recipes!

    1. Ohhhh that mint sounds amazing! I have multiple kinds of mint, but no mojito. Yum!

Not sure if you have a Costco membership, but Spindrift is on sale this month.
